Travelling can be an incredible adventure, but it’s not always easy. In fact, if you aren’t organised and fail to go about things the correct way you might find a relaxing trip becomes a lot more stress than you would have expected!

However, if you follow these five steps to a stress-free travel adventure, you should find yourself having an amazing time and making wonderful memories.

Live by lists

When it comes to planning a trip, I like to write a bucket list of everything I want to do. By researching all the best things available in a specific place, you can prioritise which things you absolutely must-do.

There’s a fine line, of course, and it’s important not to try and fit too much in. Sometimes the best adventures happen when you just go with the flow and are a little spontaneous. The best way to allow for both of these things to happen is to have a list of your must-dos, a secondary list of things you might get around to doing, and then giving yourself plenty of time in your itinerary to rest, relax, or find something random to see or do.

Do your research

You don’t have to write an essay on your travel plans, but pick up a guidebook or read a few blogs to get a feel for the place you are going. Make sure you do some research on the safest places to explore, the etiquette on various things, and the average costs of basic things, as these things will help you navigate a new place the best you can.

Another important aspect of research is looking up the local laws — you don’t want to be accidentally caught out doing something you think is innocent, not realising it’s actually illegal.

Pack carefully

When it comes to packing there are several ways to make things a little less stressful. For example, make sure you know what sort of climate to expect and pack accordingly, but with a few provisions — a lightweight waterproof jacket won’t take up too much space in your case but it might come in useful.

Pack clothing you can re-wear for different occasions, layer and dress up or down. You can pack around half the amount you think you need to, especially if you’ll have access to laundry facilities.

Keep safe

There are few things as stressful as when something goes wrong while travelling, so it’s important to take as many precautions as possible.

Keep copies of your important documents and leave the originals in the hotel safe. Spread your money across prepaid cards, cash and travellers cheques, but only take out the amount you need each day. If a situation feels unsafe, or too good to be true, the best thing you can do is to get out. Read up on any local scams so you can be aware of anything that might go awry when you’re exploring a new town.

Be prepared

There are a lot of things that could go wrong. For example, 25% of travellers admit to missing a flight — a stress that you could do without when it comes to taking a trip! Make sure you check and double-check the details of your flight, your luggage allowance and exactly what you need.

Ensure you have more than one copy of any documents you need and you know where everything is just in case. It pays to have spares! The more organised you are, the less likely things are to go wrong.
